Does eating bread, pasta or any other food containing wheat makes your body worse? Have you ever thought why this happens only when you eat something made up of wheat? You may be suffering from Gluten allergy or you can say you have gluten intolerance. Now the question comes 

 WHAT IS GLUTEN?

Basically, Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten is a complex mixture of hundreds of related but distinct proteins, mainly gliadin and glutenin. Gluten offers a variety of functional culinary benefits and is responsible for the soft, chewy texture of bread & pasta but does not provide any essential nutrients.

Mainly gluten affects the small intestine. It triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine in case of Celiac disease patient. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder. It’s also known as celiac sprue, non-tropical sprue, or gluten-sensitive enteropathy. The main component gliadin contains peptide sequences that are highly resistant to gastric, pancreatic, and intestinal proteolytic digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. It also prevents the body from absorbing essential nutrients & lead to other problems like osteoporosis, infertility, nerve damage, and seizures.

HOW WILL YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE GLUTEN ALLERGY?

If you experience these symptoms after eating gluten-containing foods, you may go for diagnostic tests after consulting your physician to know if you have gluten allergy.

Difference between wheat allergy and gluten intolerance.

Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction that occurs in the body if wheat or any food items containing wheat is ingested whereas gluten allergy is an allergic reaction to a protein, gluten which is mainly present in wheat, barley and rye.

Symptoms of wheat allergy:-

Some of the symptoms of wheat allergy include:-

·       Swelling of skin

·       Itchy rashes on the skin

·       Headache

·       Difficulty in breathing.

·       Nausea or vomiting.

·       Diarrhoea.

·       Runny nose

·       Stomach cramps


Diagnosis of Celiac disease:-

Celiac disease can be confirmed by the following diagnostic tests:-

·       Blood tests- It shows the presence of certain antibodies in the serum. High levels of anti-endomysium (EMA) and anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTGA) antibodies indicate celiac disease.

·       Complete blood count (CBC)

·       Generic testing

·       Liver function tests

·       Cholesterol test

·       Alkaline phosphatase level test

·       Serum albumin test

·       Endoscopy

 

Complications of Celiac disease:-

 

Celiac disease may lead to complications like:-

·       Malnutrition-In Celiac disease, the small intestine is unable to absorb nutrients from the food which leads to malnutrition.

·       Malabsorption- Malabsorption due to Celiac disease cause deficiency of vitamins and minerals in the body which may further lead to osteoporosis, anaemia or any such conditions.

 


Food items that should be avoided in case of gluten allergy:-

People allergic to gluten should avoid eating food items like:-

·       Breads

·       Biscuits

·       Pasta

·       Canned foods

·       Sauces

·       Crackers

·       Noodles

·       Cereals and granola

·       Pastries

These are some food items containing gluten.

Gluten may be present in other products as well. If you are allergic to gluten, you should first check it’s presence in the items you use. It can be present in :-

·       Food preservatives

·       Food stabilizers

·       Lipsticks

·       Toothpaste

·       Over-the-counter medications

·       Vitamin and mineral supplements

·       Stamp glue

Food items that should be included in the diet of people suffering from gluten allergy:-

·       Eggs

·       Fruits

·       Vegetables

·       Legumes

·       Beans

·       Eggs

·       Meat

·       Fish

Things to be taken care of incase of gluten allergy:-

·       Processed food items should be avoided.

·       Usage of food items and non- food items containing gluten should be avoided.

·       You should take vitamins and supplements according to the necessity of the body.

·       Baked food items should be avoided.
