Treatment (Drug Therapy of Migraine) –

Drug therapy of migraine has to be individualized: severity and frequency of attacks and response of individual patients to drugs used earlier determine the choice.

Treatment of Mild migraine:

Simple analgesics like paracetamol or aspirin taken at the first indication of an attack and repeated 4–6 hourly abort and suppress most mild attacks. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and their combinations are also used.

Treatment of Moderate migraine:

Simple analgesics are usually not effective in this case but stronger NSAIDs or their combinations are used. It is also treated with a specific antimigraine drug, i.e. a triptan or an ergot preparation. Antiemetics are almost regularly needed. Prophylactic therapy is advised only when attacks are more frequent than 2–3 per month.

Treatment of Severe migraine:

In this treatment various classes of drugs are used like antiemetic drugs & anti-hypertensive drugs (β blockers & Ca2+ channel blockers etc). Except this Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressants drug is also used.

Although migraine is common but it is not a trivial disease. Its treatment is necessary. Be careful if you have a migraine. Take less stress, sleep adequately at night. Take care of yourself, stay in proper treatment & protect yourself from major diseases.
